I've an answer to what happened to Asuka and Astolfo. Neither were possessed, nor were their killers.
Astolfo, Matsuoka, and Nanase were all up Thursday night together. Nanase and Matsuoka worked together to kill Asuka, with Astolfo stating that they were there to make sure nothing happened to them, before Matsuoka killed Astolfo.
'Twas all attempts to get achievements. Matsuoka and Nanase were apparently adamant and "wouldn't have it any other way."

They overheard the two of them discussing achievements from their game, and others that were known of from other participant experience. Apparently there was overlap, and, among them, killing your teammate was something they hypothesised. So Astolfo volunteered.
