So... the owl. It gives the answer to any question you ask it.
Would've liked to use it for my own stuff, but seeing as we're dropping like flies and we finally got some clues about why... figured this was more important. So I tried asking it "how do we survive against Death?"
[ pulls out a folded piece of paper, unfolds it, and reads off of it. ]
"There is no surviving against Death, only beating it at its own game unexpectedly. Death comes for all, but the turnabout begins when all is whole and the alarm goes off."
What else would be made whole, then? The islands? Thing is, it implies that we've got to play its bloody game - like death is some kind of game, but that's besides the point.
Chime's not a bad thought, either... doesn't seem much like a warning bell, though.
[ good!!! blow shit up kiruko i believe in you. he looks thoughtful for a minute after that, though. ]
... I'll try and see what I can find about that alarm. At least see if I can figure out where that bloody chime came from, if nothing else. Maybe that'll give us an idea.

[ tiredly returns the "greeting." ]

And what did it say...?

That's it.

Death comes for all, but the turnabout begins when all is whole and the alarm goes off. [ hrmm. ] Alarm, what alarm...
[ but actually, more grimly than that: ] And... all is whole. All's not... the group of us, is it?

[ a sigh. ] Better not be. We'd already be screwed if it was, right?
no subject
...Unless that means we all have to die, but that's one hell of a gamble.
[ and also proves nathalie's dream right which would annoy him solely on principle ]

Alarms... Nothing else comes to mind. Maybe it's something we haven't triggered yet.

[ this game sucks ] Hard to beat someone at it when we don't know where to start. Guess we'll have to keep an ear out...

Don't know what else to do, though, so maybe I'll try hitting the books.

[ books... he nods. better than nothing while we twiddle our thumbs. ] Got your Kiru beam on you?
[ like he's pretty sure the answer is yes but also stay strapped if you go exploring ]

[ a softer, appreciative look. ]
Stay safe out there, man.

Got to get everyone out of this mess and get back home, yeah? I don't know about you, but I'm tired of vacation.
